Amniotic Tissue Therapy
A Safe and Effective Alternative to Surgery Without the Down Time
Regenerative MedicineRegenerative medicine is a relatively new field within the medical community that focuses on the regrowth of human cells, tissues, and organs. The daily advances being made in this field are offering hope to those with currently ‘untreatable’ conditions. Regenerative medicine is helping the body to heal itself in natural ways that were thought impossible only 10 years ago. Within the field of regenerative medicine are multiple methods of new growth and healing, the most effective of which is stem cell therapy, specifically amniotic tissue therapy.
Stem Cell TherapyStem cell therapy is a general term for the use of immature cells to treat damaged and degenerated tissues. These immature cells still have the ability to differentiate or turn into many different types of cells within the body. While a skin cell cannot become a muscle cell, stem cells have not yet developed into their end form. As such, these cells have the amazing potential to become almost anything in the body. While almost all of the cells in the body are reproducible, several do not do so readily or are unable to reproduce. One of the most commonly known cells that do not regenerate and reproduce are cartilage cells, specifically, hyaline cartilage cells. These are the cells that make up the cushioning in your joints and allow for full, pain-free motion. Since these cells do not rapidly reproduce and are often under constant stress from our daily activities, it is these cells that begin to degenerate, which then leads to arthritis of the joint. Stem cells, when administered appropriately, have the ability to become new cartilage cells. These amazing cells can regrow old, deteriorated cartilage, allowing for normal motion of the joint and the reversal of the degenerative process. This new, healthy cartilage tissue turns back the clock on the wear and tear the joint has endured. It can eliminate common conditions such as osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease, leading to a fuller and more functional life.
Amniotic Tissue TherapyWithin the field of stem cell therapy several methods of treatment have arisen. Stem cell therapy began with isolating cells from a patient’s own bone marrow and then injecting them back into the areas of degeneration. These cells are not the truest form of stem cells since they have already reached a certain degree of maturity, but they still have the ability to become new tissue given the right opportunity. However, the process of extracting bone marrow is generally painful and time consuming, and the number of multipotent cells that can be obtained are limited. The next and increasingly popular form of stem cell therapy is to source the cells from the patient’s own fat tissue. These adipose stem cells are present in huge numbers in the body, are readily available, and are relatively easy to extract and isolate. The advantage here is having a large number of your own cells injected directly into the deteriorated tissue without much work up front. Unfortunately, the adipose stem cells are even more mature and differentiated than the bone marrow stem cells and therefore do not convert as readily to new cartilage tissue. The most recent advancement is amniotic tissue therapy.
Who Is It For?Amniotic tissue therapy is an ideal solution for those patients with degenerative type disorders that result in pain, limited range of motion, and decreased quality of life. Some of these disorders include arthritis of the major joints, degenerative joint disease (DJD) of the spine and degenerative disc disease (DDD) of the spine. The major joints treated at New Life Healthcare with amniotic tissue include knees, hips, ankles, elbows, and shoulders. Generally, these conditions are found in people over age 55 as the effects of everyday wear and tear lead to damaged, dry and painful joints. However, younger patients who have suffered injuries to these joints can also show early signs of degeneration and could benefit greatly from amniotic tissue therapy.
These are some of the most commonly treated conditions:
By combining amniotic tissue therapy with corrective chiropractic care, you will not only be able to stop the progression of the degenerative process, but will finally be able to start reversing damage that has kept you from doing the things you enjoy most. Is It Safe? One of the concerns with amniotic tissue therapy is whether or not the stem cells are from ideal sources and if they can be trusted coming from other people. In short, the same standards applied by the FDA to any organ donated for a transplant are also applied to the placentas donated for amniotic tissue therapy. Rigorous testing by the FDA includes testing for current or prior drug use, overall health history of the mother, no tattoos, and screening for any communicable diseases, genetic defects, or other possible negative factors. If there is even the slightest complication in the birth of the donor mother’s baby, the harvesting process is discontinued. Essentially, these tissues must pass the same rigorous testing as do those organs that are used in transplant surgeries throughout the country. Just as with organ donation, the patient supplying the placenta is also thoroughly screened and tested for any type of condition that would make the tissue less than ideal. Placentas that have been donated are carefully delivered to organ transplant facilities where the tissues are isolated for further use.
